I really enjoyed this article as well as the painting. I think Os Gemeos combined the style and symbols of older, “classical” art with modern day art styles very well. I found the painting to be very progressive. These days, while people still visit the Louvre and other well known museums to see classic (and usually famous) paintings such as the Mona Lisa, it’s hard for them to appreciate those works of art. However, it is easier for people today to truly appreciate modern day works of art, such as graffiti art like this painting, and see the value in it. Art like this relates to people today more easily and really grabs their attention. Os Gemeos were able to not only grab and hold the public’s attention with their work but also expose them to more classical styles that the public would’ve otherwise been ignorant to.
I really liked seeing one the Os Gêmeos’s works. I do think that there is a difference between what the brothers do, which I consider art, and street graffiti. Having grown up around DC and taking the metro many times, I have seen a lot of graffiti on my way into the city. Most of what I have seen as been street graffiti, which mostly consist of gang symbols or names, people names, or small signs and other symbols, but there are the few times where a mural or other type of graffiti will catch my eye and I get beautiful pieces of art. I think that the type of graffiti and murals the Os Gêmeos and other artists around the country do can cut down on the gang related graffiti that has increased in cities. I really liked the brothers work despite it’s kind of strange and a little confusing composition.
I thoroughly enjoyed the work of Os Gemeos’s, as well as graffiti art in a general sense. I see graffiti as a way for modern artists to reflect the culture of that time and place onto a surface that is seen by travelers and community members. As shiny and new as our country is, I think that street art is an appropriate modern style of self and cultural expression. We study cave paintings now, we dissect them and use them to determine the way the people of that time lived and what was important to them. Years from now, maybe people will look at graffiti and have insight to what was important to us and take note of how important art is to our culture.
After reading the article I was very interested in looking up other works by the artists. I enjoy how much color and hidden narrative that they incorporate within their art. I like how they also bring Brazilian elements to their works and use some of their heritage as inspiration. It must have been a very exciting thing to showcase their artwork in Manhattan, especially since it would be seen by thousands of people every day. I wonder how they eventually decided on the work they displayed and what their thought process was when creating it?
I find this art work very interesting! Especially being so close to DC and seeing the graffiti around the city, it’s very easy to compare the two. Like another commenter said, much of the graffiti you see in DC are small symbols or gang related work. Graffiti is often seen as a negative, criminal-like action but it’s really cool to see the other side of it!
This work by Os Gemeos was really cool to look at. They represented so many different cultures in it as well as Brazilian. Their use of black lines really brought the features they were trying to convey . It doesn’t have the three dimensional effect that most graffiti art shows. It shows how art has progressed over the years. It seems as if the artists from the renaissance incorporated more detail in their art. I’ve always been curious why the art today spent bring out the same emotions it did during those times.
I love looking at Os Gêmeos’s works. I love how they integrated their heritage along with many other elements, stories and use of bright colors. I am a fan of graffiti art and have always been fascinated by the narratives and colors in the works of art. I always wondered how they could achieve such beauty on a blank wall, especially using spray paint, which isn’t easy to work with.
I’ve been asking my mom to take me to New York City for years now, and she still hasn’t done so. She’s more of a traditional art fan, so I don’t think this would convince her to suddenly take me on a trip, but it’s still incredibly fascinating! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the use of bright colors, because it really puts a positive light on this graffiti. I know that many people have a negative connotation of graffiti, but it really does have the potential to be beautiful.
I think graffiti art can be one of the most amazing forms of art, particularly because of its rawness. I’ve researched graffiti prior to this, and I’ve seen other works by Os Gêmeos on trips that I’ve taken to New York City. Their work is vibrant and interesting, especially their depictions of people. The colors are always captivating because of the bright yellows they like to use.
While reading I was really enjoying the description of the artwork and the suddenly it said that the art work would only be up until March. It made me a little sad that something so detailed, meaningful, and unique would be taken down. This brought me back to the reality that this was in fact street graffiti; so it make sense. I adored that the artist are so original; their name is so interesting to me. I loved that they dedicated the work to a dead graffiti artist. That makes me wonder it there is some type of community or shared respect amongst graffiti artist.
